Luminescent or fluorescent colours were first invented by Bob Switzer in the 1930s. After suffering an accident, he was advised to recover in a dark room where he would pass the time by waving fluorescent minerals around in the air. This inspired his later experiments of mixing wood varnish with the minerals, creating a product named Day-Glo.
